In an unexpected turn of events, popular fast-food chain Burger Singh fell victim to a cyberattack orchestrated by a Pakistani hacking group known as Team Insane PK, the company revealed on Tuesday.

As per company’s post on X, the group not only infiltrated but also revamped the burger franchise’s website on the 27th of February, 2024, leaving behind a digital graffiti wall that echoed their mischievous exploits.

In a quirky and candid advisory addressed to their valued patrons, Burger Singh acknowledged the digital breach with a touch of humor. According to the message, the hackers, who had previously been engaged in digital activities with Delhi Police, Mumbai Police, and others, chose to give special attention to Burger Singh’s online domain.

The cyber saga traces back to a promotional mistake by Burger Singh, featuring a promo code – ‘FPAK20’ – with geopolitical undertones. The hackers unexpectedly took an interest in Burger Singh’s website and used it as their canvas for digital doodling, which led to an unintended consequence.

Burger Singh’s response to the cyber intrusion was notably unconventional. Instead of immediately cleaning up the digital graffiti, the company decided to leave it up for a day, treating it as an ‘open mic night for hackers’. This approach, as described by Burger Singh, is a way of showcasing the unexpected places where inspiration can strike.

The burger joint was confident in their ability to overcome this hiccup, assuring customers that the digital disruption would be a temporary setback. Burger Singh’s positive outlook prompted him to playfully hint at creating the next big thing to elevate their brand.

To Burger Singh’s beloved patrons, the advisory concluded with a reassuring message: “Keep calm and carry on. Our digital hiccup is just that – a hiccup. Our journey is filled with more ups than downs, more burgers than breaches, and certainly, more laughs than worries.”

Rather than swiftly erasing the digital graffiti, Burger Singh made an unconventional decision to leave it up for a day, transforming the incident into what they dubbed as an “open mic night for hackers”.

Company’s response

The company said, “Here’s the scoop: our website didn’t just get a new look; it got a whole new attitude, albeit one we didn’t sign up for. While we’re on the subject, let’s clear the air: our website is currently a work in progress. Think of it as that one room in your house you’ve been meaning to clean up but haven’t gotten around to yet.”

According to Burger Singh, this approach serves as a testament to the diverse wellsprings of inspiration that can spark innovative ideas. Despite the temporary setback caused by the cyber intrusion, the burger joint remains optimistic about navigating this challenge.

“We’re channeling our inner cool uncle and not just rushing to clean up the mess. Instead, we’re keeping the graffiti up for a day… It’s our way of saying, ‘Take a good look, folks. Inspiration strikes in the oddest of places’,” the post added.

In a playful yet reassuring tone, Burger Singh hinted at refocusing efforts towards creating the next big thing while assuring patrons that the digital disruption is merely a temporary hiccup. The company’s message resonated with a blend of resilience and humor. They signed off the post with: “To our beloved patrons, we say: keep calm and carry on. Our digital hiccup is just that – a hiccup… Stay hungry, Stay foolish”.
